Urinary Urgency and Its Relationship to Movement

Our bladder can truly run the show! Urinary urgency, an intense need to urinate, can be stressful as well as incredibly inconvenient and may lead to urinary leakage.  Like any clinical diagnosis, there can be so many drivers for urinary urgency.  Some causes include; food, liquids, hormones, infections, inflammation, stress, and even muscle and joint limitations!  In fact, certain movements may worsen feelings of urgency.  But don’t worry, other movements, or retraining a movement pattern, can actually decrease the sensation of urgency..  This is often a surprising connection for patients.

For instance, if you have knee pain that limits hip and spinal mobility, it can impact how efficiently your pelvic floor muscles are being used.  Constrained movements in one part of our body often impact other regions.  Nerves that originate from the spine contribute neurally to the bladder, so avoiding patterns of movement because of knee or back pain may cause create more than just some tight feeling muscles.  Our bladder appreciates a well balanced musculoskeletal system! The Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy I offer  identifies root causes, contributing tissue, joint, and neural components, behaviors, and intrinsic drivers such as hormones and guides you through the necessary movement reprogramming to alleviate urinary urgency.
